धृतराष्ट्र उवाच |
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः |
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय || 1 ||

इस श्लोक में राजा धृतराष्ट्र अपने सारथी और सलाहकार संजय से पूछते हैं:
“हे संजय! जब मेरे (धृतराष्ट्र के) पुत्र और पांडु के पुत्र धर्मभूमि कुरुक्षेत्र में युद्ध की इच्छा से एकत्र हुए, तब उन्होंने क्या किया?”
🔹 ‘धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे’ — कुरुक्षेत्र एक पवित्र भूमि है, जिसे धर्म का क्षेत्र कहा गया है।
🔹 ‘मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव’ — ‘मेरे पुत्र’ (कौरव) और ‘पांडव’ (दूसरे पक्ष)।
🔹 धृतराष्ट्र का यह प्रश्न दर्शाता है कि वह युद्ध के परिणाम को लेकर आशंकित हैं, खासकर क्योंकि यह धर्मभूमि है जहाँ पांडवों को नैतिक समर्थन प्राप्त हो सकता है।
Explanation in English:
In this first verse, King Dhritarashtra asks his charioteer Sanjaya:
“O Sanjaya, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do when they assembled on the holy land of Kurukshetra, eager for battle?”
🔹 ‘Dharma-kshetre Kuru-kshetre’ — Kurukshetra is referred to as a land of righteousness (dharma).
🔹 ‘Mamakah Pandavas chaiva’ — “My sons” (Kauravas) and the Pandavas are mentioned as two separate entities.
🔹 The tone reveals Dhritarashtra’s internal conflict and bias — he doesn’t see both sides equally, indicating emotional attachment and possibly fear of the outcome due to the righteousness associated with the Pandavas.
